Despite the rainy April we’ve had, spring has been trying its hardest to shine through the clouds (and it’s been doing a great job lately). Similarly, over here at Stupid Idiot Press, we have been trying to do the same with our motivation and creative ruts. What always seems to help when experiencing a creative burnout is engaging with new artists and finding inspiration in their work. The artists included in this volume of Artists We’re Loving have definitely helped bring the sun out.
Creative rut or not, we hope they can do the same for you, too! And if they do, obviously go give them a follow! (Or just follow them anyways!)
Alina Fresquez Patrick
Alina Fresquez Patrick is a photographer, writer, and multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Partial to the forced slowness of analog processes, Patrick uses her photography and art as a means of documenting stories of culture and displacement as well as her own family. Patrick seems to approach each story with the same amount of energy and respect. It does not matter if she is a returning tourist in a different country, like for El Color De, or in the home she grew up in, like for Shoot the Moon, Scatter the Stars, the work she creates is equally intimate, raw, refreshing, and hauntingly beautiful. Experiencing Patrick’s photographs is like listening to that one song you love so much you can’t help but tear up.
Also, Patrick’s first book of photography and poetry, How to grow una flor en el desierto, was recently published by the Penumbra Foundation in 2023. The book is available for purchase through inquiry and can be found in the permanent collection of the International Center of Photography.
